I found four 15x15 led arrays in the dumpster the other day. I was thinking about how to drive them to make a 1x4 panel matrix display. My plan was to use johnson counters (with power transistors) to scan the 15 rows and use shift register led drivers to light the 60 individual led's per row. I'll be using a TI launchpad for the brains.

1. increment johnson counter
2. shift in the row data
3. repeat

I hope the scanning is fast enough to be flicker-free. I have these parts laying around. This might be a bit time-consuming to get this all put together so I wanted to ask the experts, will what I'm planning work?

Thanks.

Nice find!
I haven't yet try this but a chip like this:

might be a much better option.
They have a lot of different chips to choose from:

Plus you can probably get a free sample Very Happy

I think the hint I'm getting is that it's going to get pretty messy trying to do things with shift registers and row counters, plus I was thinking that shifting in 60 bits every row might be slow and impractical.
