LED tail light and brake light

I got one of those red led strip -



What I'm trying to do is from 2 different 12v source have 1 source become a 9v source to create the taillight and the other source be used as the break light.

I've looked up a couple of 12v to 9v converter and I think I can build something, but need a parts list.

I found this little item:

Which seems to be exactly what I need to build - Anyone know the parts needed?

Also would like to prevent the 12v current from going into the 9v current - Do I simply need to add a simple diiode at each input ?

I'm guessing there's a small controller somewhere that can take a 12v input and drop it to a 9v, but if a 12v trigger is receive then it outputs 12v?

Any help would be appreciated!

Somewhat found an answer using a 7809 voltage regulator.

Now I just need to figure out how I can do a voltage switch based on a trigger.

Ahh good ol' electornics coming back!

I guess can then use a 5 pin relay - so that I can connect the 12v to the open end so that when 12v is triggered, then 12v goes through, otherwise 9v goes through.

Now I just need someone to confirm all of this

That will work. Some of the caps won't be needed for DC automotive use but won't hurt to use.
