I recently picked up a large scrolling LED marquee for about $100aud, composed of of about a hundred led matrix tiles capapable of displaying one character. "Textron" Brand

It has a serial port on the back, presumably for connection to a pc. The only problem is that it did not come with a driver disk, nor is there any driver listed online with that brand. I have emailed the company, who have never even heard of the device.

Possibly the easiest method would be to use some sort of generic driver - do these exist?

Alternatively, is there some way i can hack the protocol it uses?

I would try sending some serial data to it and see what happens. I am sure it is quite hackable. Look up the driver chips it uses and interface to them directly.
