Stepper motors are very acurate motors used in printers, scanners and CNC machines.
They are very acurate motors but are sometimes tricky to controll.
Rotational movement is created via closing circuits between the positive(+) or power in and the -- of the different coils.
Stepper motors can be unipolar and bipolar.
Unipolar motors are the simplest of the both and the easieas to controll.
Bipolar motors use only 2 or 3 coils which must be energized in turn and with diferent polarities, and so require pretty complex circuits.
The best IC I recomend for powering Unipolar stepper motors is the ULN2803 hooked to a decade counter logic IC.
The second integrated circuit can count up or down and send pulses to diferent coils moving the spindle of a motor CW or CCW.

I like Unipolar since it can be wired up to act as a bipolar.

Len from Probotix has a tutorial that describes the differences.
