Two sites that can help with planning projects with LEDs:

http://led.linear1.org/1led.wiz - Calculator for a single LED. You put in your source voltage, your LED's forward voltage and forward current, and it will give you the minimum resistor you should use (as well as the colors).

http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz - Calculator for setting up an LED array. Give the site your source voltage, LED's forward voltage and forward current, and the number of LEDs in your array, and it will whip up a nice diagram for you. Choose the "wiring diagram" and check mark "help with resistor color codes."
