I've just modded a computer power supply to work as a reliable, high-current lab bench supply. It has -5, -12, 3.3, 5, and 12 V output. Everything's contained in the steel case, complete with binding posts, switches, and a PWR_OK indicator.

You just have to ground that one pin and it'll turn on.

Yup. I used a small PCB to amplify the PWR_GOOD signal because it was too weak to drive an LED. I'll post a picture soon.

Was that a standard PC power supply that you modded or did the case always look like that? I don't know why more people don't use old computer supplies for hobby use, that are cheap and stable.

It was a non-standard shaped ATX-compliant PSU from an HP Vectra. So, it always looked like that.

Chiming in late, haven't been a mamber long. My "Old Reliable" power supply is an old AT style thet I modded the same way years ago. Any time I get my hands on an old computer I remove the AT PS so I have spares later. It's nice to steal the various fans for later use too.

I've been looking for a cheap little bench psu but I'm amazed at the prices seccond hand units are fetching on Ebay, there must be more tinkerers out there than I thought.

It's just when there's mains voltages involved I get a little scared, had 240 volts go through me before and dont want it to happen again Embarassed
