"Desperate to get rid of some PC noise and realizing I'm in a relatively cool climate (Utah mountains) I decided to duct that cool air into my PC. It worked. Even under heavy load the temps never exceeded 60 C."

depending on Specs of the PC 60C is still really high. You might want to look at unblocking the exhaust vents on the back or at the very least putting in a higher flow fan on the exhaust port (assuming that the vent hose is exhaust.)

You can get hi flow low Db fans pretty easily. Also volt modding the fans is an option.

My linux rig currently only does about 20-30Db and it sits about 4' from my bed in my room.

My Main rig does about 50Db+ and it can be heard from the front door.

Specs for the two rigs are..

Gaming Rig
CPU AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800 @ 2400 MHz (10 x 240)
Motherboard Epox EP-9NPA+ SLI
Memory G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR400
Video Card EVGA NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT256 MB X2
Hard Drives 2 Seagate PATA 120 GB, 1 Seagate SATA 120 GB, 1 Samsung PATA 250GB, 1 WD SATA 160GB=770GB of XP Pro Annoyance.
Monitor BenQ FP202W Black 20.1"

Linux Rig
CPU Intel Pentium 4 socket 478 2.8 (Non OCed yet)
Motherboard Gigabyte RZ series craptastic board
Memory Crucial PC2100 1 GB
Video Card BFG NVidia 6600GT OC AGP
Hard Drives 1 WD 100GB 1 WD 40GB 1 Seagate 160GB 1 Samsung 160 GB= 500GB of Debian based Fury.
Monitor Crappy 15" LCD will be upgraded later.
