Can anybody help me please? I have a reader/writer with software that was written/designed to use on the serial port. The problem I have is that I want to use the machine on a compaq presario 2500 notebook and it does not have a serial port. I have purchased a usb to serial/rs232 cable, I have installed the drivers and the computer recognises the cable but not the machine. The software has a detecion option for ports com1 to com4. It says that com3 is available but it cannot communicate with the machine. How can I solve this problem.

Regards

Some of those USB to serial port adapters have slightly different timing and voltages. You may want to try a different brand, buy it from a place that will accept returns.
