DIY usb anemometer

hi all,

I have been working some time now in my first DIY project,
"an anemometer"

I'm computer engineer, by profession, so it have proved to be a real challenge...

I want to do something useful, and that is a usb anemometer that can be used so XP or vista. almost all the projects I have read. are outdated.

there were an article were a guy used an usb joystick as interface between the anemometer and the computer. but it was in the now closed geocities...and i didn't save it.

so, I request for help...info,ideas..examples.
