this ShiftBrite LED table:

and of course the beautiful table Edo built:
http://hackedgadgets.com/2009/06/05/64-rgb-led-color-table/
Have given me the inspiration for my requisite summer DIY project but the issue is I'm usually a color-by-numbers DIYer where I need help and plenty of it.
What I want to make is a table, with a sized down square of frosted plexi, that houses some Volume Unit meters to respond to music. While Arduinos and RGB LEDs would make for some gorgeous meters and possible fading etc I would have no idea how to go about this.
Has anyone seen any kind of large scale VU Meters created with guides that might not be too difficult to replicate?
Or if anyone can point me in any direction for learning a little more to judge this projects do-ability Id really appreciate! |

ah silly me, what I'm really thinking about is an audio spectrum analyzer, which I guess i just a few VU meters wired to detect only certain frequencies.

Something like this but smaller, this is 16x16 but I think 8x8 would look nice too and be a simpler project obviously.

Although I don't think the music is synced to the table in this video |
