sweet thanks!

sorry i forgot to add... heat is a concern for me. i need something with no or virtually no heat. i have experimented various led's thinking the higher the 'mcd' the brighter the light. but im beginning to understand thats not the case!

i have a 'streamlight' pen light which is prefect! nothing else seems to half as bright.

can anyone help me please?

You can always run them at a lower current. If running a 1W at 100ma you shouldn't have to worry about heat. And the K2's can get as hot as 150 C before they are damaged.

btw. The high power LEDs will most likely need a lens or reflector to focus the light.

Most of the higher power LEDs require heatsinks, there's really no way around it. The Cree 3W LEDs have very wide viewing angles. The emission pattern is pretty well hemispherical.
My favorite source for hi power LEDs is DealExtreme. They offer LED light engines up to 50W, with a 1700 lumen light output. Shocked Before purchasing, make sure to read up on the quality grading process. Hi power LEDs are graded for light output & similar units may have drastic differences in light production. The only difference may be one letter in the part number. Have fun. Smile
