I have need to create a motion sensor that will eaisly attach to a cell phone. When the motion sensor is tripped- it causes the cell phone to dial out to a specific number, or.........send a text message such as "Motion detected- sector 3".

Does anyone have any ideas if there is device out there that can do this? Any help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

Cheers-
Andy

Very cool idea. I am not sure if a normal phone would have the processing power to do it. I am sure a Apple phone or Trio could do it though.

I don´t know what skills you have Andy, so I´m unable to offer you
a targeted advice, but will generalize and assume some knowledge
here:

Today - chinese manufacturers will sell to even "hobbyist" single
GSM/GPRS/WIFI/Bluetooth units (these are modules used to
create real-life cellphones). It takes some learning to know how
to interface them, but afaik - they´re as easy to set up as a Hitachi
44xxxx display because they´ve got "modem commands" and "serial
comms" built into them so in theory you could program a small pic,
microcontroller...that sense the inputs, and triggers a message
sent to the GSM-module that in turn dials an SMS to you.

If that sounds too complex for you, you could always do
it the "hack-a-cellphone" way, perhaps find a cellphone that
supports "program short-cuts"... perhaps even fast-dial assigned
to one of these buttons, gut-the-phone and hotwire the buttons
directly to your switching mechanism/electronics and it would
be just like "you" pressing the buttons except it´s your circuitry
that does this for you.

a 3rd alternative could be if your older type cellphone have some
kind of "modem cable" that supports AT type commands...could
also interface that one to the pic / microcontroller of your choice,
and that would be a pretty safe, cool way to do this with unlimited
choices.

Thats about what I could get from the tip of my tongue Wink
