I just put together a how-to for converting a cheap (approx $10) USB to serial cable into something capable of programming the Arduino board. Not sure, but could also be used to interface with many microcontrollers.

I hate those dongles... I wish new systems still provided true RS-232 out, even if it were via a tiny new style header.
