Hey all!
This week I have a lil practice amp based off the Make crackerbox amp, which is based on the runoffgroove lil gem amp.
Build log - http://www.nonentity.com/New/Main/Projects/PracticeAmp.htm
The wood is a fine piece of quilted Maple, with several coats of High Gloss Tung oil. I got the speaker grille cloth from the ol Internet. The bottom case cover is the back of an old Harddrive.
The amp turns on when you plug in the 1/4 guitar cord. This was possible by using a stereo jack, and using the unused other channel lug to complete the ground back to the battery.
The LED light intensifies with the amp (strum harder for brighter light). This also allows me to use the light as a tuner, as bad harmonics between strings will cause the light to shimmer, and in-tune strings will be a solid light.
This picture is from before when I still had a toggle on off switch, and before I added the LED status light, but it is the main layout anyway.
Gain is the right knob, volume is the left knob, and surprisingly, this lil fella sounds pretty good! There's a headphone jack that cuts power to the speaker when it's engaged, so I can practice quietly.
I've already had people ask if I can make them one, both for guitar and bass. So looks like I have some boards to etch.

I might have enough time to put a few together, at that! Where is it held? I am new to Austin and would love to go. I assume there's information on the MAKE site? |

I really wish I was going to be able to make it this year. _________________ _ _ . . . . . . _ _ |

Added a couple custom machined knobs for my amp this weekend...
Found some appropriate aluminum rod and decided to knurl and dish it.
I haven't decided if I am going to keep it that way, I kind of liked the look of the old black knobs. But I wanted something a little more custom, and I like the feel of the metal knobs better.
As always, the steps I took to make them are on the page.. http://www.nonentity.com/New/Main/Projects/PracticeAmp.htm |

Those knobs turned out real good! Looks you have a cool shop full of specialty tools. |

Thanks Alan. Yeah, I have most of what I need in my garage. Table saw, router, drill press, etc. But the lathe and welders are at my shop back on the ranch. We have a giant 3 phase lathe the size of a truck and a smaller smithy milling/lathe machine. Plus several different kinds of welders and blowtorches, etc.
Literally TONS of fun.
I like how the knobs turned out, but I think I might paint part of them black. Haven't decided yet. |
