I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask..

Does anybody know a place where I can learn about USB connections?

I want to design my own gadget for the USB port and I need to know how to connect it/get power.

Thanks.

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/usb.htm

That should help some

All I've ever really done DIY wise is make a crappy little fan and get my xbox controller and remote to work on my pc Razz

Here is the pinout for it:

http://pinouts.ru/Slots/USB_pinout.shtml

As you can see, +5V is pin 1
Ground is pin 4

You can tap these two pins to power your device if you do not have an external power source. If you would like to use the data pins, you are going to need some kind of microprocessor to do the communication.

I have done a few things with USB....mostly harnessing th 5 volts, because it is a clean voltage source, but I have done very minor things with the standard as well.

My latest was using the 5 volt source to power a ICD2 clone pic programmer the manufacturer said drew all of the needed power to program with. Yeah, enough to power the PROGRAMMER, but no voltage on the chip pins....so I spliced in a 5 volt source before the ICSP cable went to the chip. Fixes like that are invaluable.

Be careful with the specs on the motors. You might be able to drive them, but I would use something external to power them. Little motors, like floppy drive stepper motors, should be okay.
